New Turf

It's been about a month since my last post, even though it seems like no time at all. Time is flying. But I wanted to give a little update about what the content on this blog is going to cover for a while...

Almost a week ago I moved to Galveston Island, about 40 miles south of Houston, from Austin where I lived for the better part of the last 7 years. Many (including myself) may think I am crazy for moving from such a awesome, beautiful city to a little beach town that most would generally describe as ghetto. But first off, Galveston has always been home to people who love hobbies, art, antiques, Victorian architecture, and having a good time, people with soul. But within the last two years there's been an influx of unique modern/vintage shops, boutiques, yoga studios, etc. that are giving the town some serious character. Oddly enough, I've been hearing much talk of people moving here from places like Austin, Seattle, and even California and I'm definitely starting to catch that vibe. A mini beach-Austin would make my heart so very happy.

Besides that exciting fact, there are a few other reasons that I believe are pretty great. Around the time I decided I needed to do something different with my life while living in Austin, I had a rare opportunity to rent a two bedroom house from my dad for a great price that he had previously decided to sell and move out of. The idea just popped into my head, and I thought about it for a good couple months. The thought of being close to the beach and much closer to friends and family seemed pretty invaluable at the time, and still does! I've been missing the outdoors a ton, and I've been wanting a fun, quick way to get in shape as well, and Galveston offers both. Paying extremely high rent to an apartment complex where your money is literally disappearing gets very old, and since the house is a fixer-upper (which gets my creative juices flowing big time) I thought this would be a great investment opportunity as well!

So far I have been extremely overwhelmed not only from packing and getting rid of tons of stuff I don't need, but now the fact that I have to deep clean the entire house while I'm living there before I can really unpack and get things in their place. After dunking my new home in a large metaphorical bucket of soap and water I will most assuredly be posting lots of painting and other DIY's. I am quite excited for the new venture, especially since I can walk my happy butt down to the beach any time I get stressed. Stay tuned! This should be interesting.
